Team from Lithuania has won the European Statistics Competition
Today, Eurostat has announced that a team of students from Lithuania won the European Statistics Competition. Now in its seventh year, the goal of the Competition is to develop statistical literacy and analytical skills of high school students, as well as to provide teachers with new ideas on how to apply official data in the classroom.
The aforementioned Competition consists of two stages: national (organized by the State Data Agency (Statistics Lithuania) and European. A record number of students participated in the Lithuanian national stage for the second consecutive year: this year, as many as 130 teams from various Lithuanian schools decided to test their knowledge and talents.
The best teams from 20 European countries such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Poland competed in the European stage. In total, more than 22 thousand students from Europe participated in the Competition.
Teams invited to the European stage had to analyze official statistics and prepare a video on the topic "Everything was better before!" Truth or not?". Their works were evaluated by a competent commission consisting of professionals from various fields: journalists, lecturers, analysts and communication specialists.
After counting the scores, it has become clear that the best team in the 11–12th grade category is the team of students from Vilnius Abraomas Kulvietis Classical Gymnasium. Its members will be awarded at a ceremony in Madrid at the end of June.
This year, teams from Lithuania have demonstrated and proved extremely high–level skills and ability. The third place in the same age category went to students from Vilnius Lyceum.
“In order to ensure that in the future all decisions important for our country are made based on data, we need to start talking to the younger generation about statistics, their use and importance as early as possible. Development of statistical literacy is a significant task for us. Understanding the importance of attracting and engaging students in figures, their proper use and data culture, we strive to constantly expand the scope of educational activities and projects, which are and will be organized in the future. We are pleased that this year the students were properly evaluated for their achievements at the pan-European level”, noted Dr Jūratė Petrauskienė, Director General of the State Data Agency.
