Teachers’ Day: Behind the Numbers – People

On 5 October, we celebrate Teachers’ Day – an opportunity to thank those who teach, listen, inspire, and guide young people on their journey of learning. Data collected by the State Data Agency (Statistics Lithuania) helps us better understand this community.

In the 2024–2025 academic year, 27,186 teachers and school leaders worked in general education schools in Lithuania, of whom 19,777 were subject teachers. The number of teachers in Lithuania is roughly equivalent to the population of Jonava.

The teaching community consists of educators from various subject areas. In the 2024–2025 academic year, the largest groups of teachers taught English (3,083), Lithuanian (2,644), and mathematics (2,077). Compared to the 2023–2024 academic year, the number of English teachers increased by 296 (from 2,787 to 3,083), Lithuanian teachers by 38 (from 2,606 to 2,644), and mathematics teachers by 21 (from 2,056 to 2,077). Meanwhile, the number of music teachers slightly decreased (from 794 to 785), as did the number of chemistry teachers (from 420 to 405).

Today, approximately 349,500 students are enrolled in general education schools in Lithuania, with an average of 12–13 students per teacher.

General Education School Teachers

In the 2024–2025 academic year, 27.2 thousand teachers and school leaders worked in Lithuania’s general education schools. More than 74 per cent of them (around 20.2 thousand) have 15 or more years of work experience. Newcomers (teachers with up to 4 years of professional experience) make up about 3.7 thousand, or 14 per cent of all educators.

In terms of age structure, there were 567 of the youngest teachers (under 25 years old). The largest group consisted of teachers aged 55–59 – 5,009 in total. Other sizable age groups included: 50–55 years – 4,401 teachers, 45–49 years – 3,659, and 40–44 years – 2,525 teachers.

Education Professionals in General Education Schools

A total of 98 per cent of teachers and school leaders hold a university degree, and 1.4 per cent have a college-level education. 27,187 teachers and school leaders worked in Lithuania’s general education schools. The community consists of 24,015 women and only 3,171 men, with men making up just 11.7 per cent of all educators.

The school community includes not only teachers. There are 4,357 other educational professionals working in schools: psychologists, speech therapists, social pedagogues, and special education teachers.

The average salary in the education sector is increasing. In the second quarter of 2020, it was EUR 1,246.1 (gross), and by the second quarter of 2025, it had reached EUR 2,299.1. Over five years, salaries have increased by more than EUR 1,000.

Thank You, Teachers!

Numbers help us understand the size, experience, and competencies of the teaching community. They remind us that a teacher is a highly qualified professional whose work plays a crucial role in shaping the future of the country. On Teachers’ Day, it’s worth remembering that behind every statistic are real people who, every day, help the younger generation pursue knowledge and achieve great results.

Happy Teachers’ Day!
