Internet usage continues to grow – over 90% of Lithuanian households have its access

The State Data Agency (Statistics Lithuania) has published the latest statistical information on the use of information technologies and tools in Lithuania. Publication figures illustrate the reason of using the Internet most often, how many people have it at home, and also provide information on the use of social networks: a considerable number of people are trying to refrain from this common habit.

This year, 90.4 per cent of households had Internet access at home, that is by 1.8 per cent more than last year, and by 8.3 per cent more than in 2020. In urban areas, households having Internet access at home accounted for 92.7 per cent, in rural areas – 85.3 per cent.

Recent trends show that more and more of the country’s population prefers to buy, order goods or services online. In 2020, 53.8 per cent of persons aged 16–74 were using the Internet for such purposes, while in 2024 the share of such users reached 64.4 per cent.

E-commerce was mostly used to buy clothing, footwear, accessories (63.4 per cent of e-commerce users); cosmetics, beauty or health products (34.3 per cent); medicines, food supplements, vitamins (31.2 per cent); prepared foodstuffs and beverages delivered from catering enterprises (26.9 per cent); food products and beverages from shops (23.5 per cent); household appliances or electronics (25.6 per cent); cleaning products and articles for personal hygiene (21.1 per cent); furniture and interior accessories (18.6 per cent).

The Internet was mainly used for search of information, communication and banking services: 86.5 per cent of all persons aged 16–74 (97.4 per cent of internauts in this age group) used the Internet for search of information, 85.9 per cent (96.5 per cent of internauts) – communication, 79.6 per cent (89.4 per cent of internauts) – online banking services.

73.8 per cent of persons aged 16–74 (82.4 per cent of internauts in this age group) used the electronic services provided by public authorities and other public service institutions at least once a year.

Statistical data also reveal interesting information about the use of social networks by the country’s population. It may be noted that a significant part of the country’s population tried to delete or have already removed (closed) their social network or app accounts this year. There were 23.2 per cent of Internet users in the age group of 1624, and 23.7 per cent in the age group of 2554. In the age group of older people (aged 5574), there were 10.6 per cent of such persons.

Elderly people were less successful in deleting social network or app accounts: 37.6 per cent of persons aged 5574 faced certain difficulties and encountered technical obstacles.

Social network accounts, free apps or free services are still mostly used by the youngest population group (aged 1624), which means that 88.8 per cent of representatives of this group use or have social network accounts, apps or services), the least – by representatives of the 5574 age group (62.7 per cent).
