At the meeting of the European Statistical Advisory Committee, issues related to the implementation of regulations on statistics were discussed
On November 27–28, Dr Jūratė Petrauskienė, Director General of the State Data Agency (Statistics Lithuania), participated in the 46th meeting of the European Statistical Advisory Committee (ESAC) in Brussels.
During the event, representatives of Eurostat and ESAC presented to the participants progress in the implementation of draft regulations on statistics since the start of the new European Union political cycle following the European Parliament elections. To meet user needs, Eurostat plans to continue actively participating in negotiations regarding relevant statistical regulations and to monitor the implementation of legislation related to statistical competence.
The meeting also addressed issues related to gross domestic product (GDP). It was emphasized that GDP is neither the only nor the most appropriate indicator of a country’s development and progress. It is important to consider demographic, geopolitical, climate, and other significant factors. Currently, a review of the national accounts system is underway, accompanied by active discussions and plans to approve several changes related to this need. National accounts represent an internationally recognized standardized system of statistical indicators that provides a comprehensive reflection of the national economic situation.
The meeting also extensively discussed current issues in social statistics, as well as regional and urban statistics.
ESAC was established in 2008. The Committee assists the European Parliament, the European Council, and the European Commission in ensuring that, in coordinating the European statistical work programme and the EU statistical information policy, needs and requirements of the users of statistics are taken into account as much as possible, alongside the costs incurred by data providers and preparers.
