A Project Capable of Supporting the Analysis of Passenger Transport by Inland Waterways is Being Implemented
The State Data Agency (Statistics Lithuania) has implemented the EU-wide project “Passenger Transport by Inland Waterways”.
Transport is one of the key economic sectors in the European Union, playing a vital role in modern mobile societies. Statistics from Eurostat highlight critical aspects of transportation, such as the annual volume of transported goods and passengers, the number of transport vehicles and infrastructure, as well as the contribution of transport services to the overall economy.
Upon the completion of the mentioned project, it becomes possible to analyze the overall scale of passenger transport via inland waterways, including its distribution by travel type (e.g., ferry, urban and regional transport, or single-day trips) and by region. These data allow for identifying passenger flow trends and evaluating the contribution of inland waterway transport to sustainability goals.
Climate change and environmental degradation pose a significant threat to Europe and the world. The European Green Deal is one of six key priorities of the European Commission for 2019–2024. Its goal is to create a cleaner, healthier, and climate-neutral Europe by fundamentally transforming the ways we produce and consume.
The European Green Deal places special emphasis on ensuring a smooth transition to sustainable and smart mobility.A clear path is needed to achieve a 90 per cent reduction in transport-related greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. To accelerate this transition, the European Commission has introduced several proposals to modernize the EU’s transport system, focusing on innovation and sustainability:
- strengthening the interconnectivity of transport modes and shifting passengers and cargo to railways and inland waterways;
- promoting the development of alternative fuel usage and charging infrastructure;
- encouraging the implementation and support of new digital technologies;
- focusing more on the development of sustainable urban transport;
- ensuring simpler, more efficient, and attractive choices among various transport modes in a multimodal transport system.
To ensure the implementation of these proposals and monitor progress toward the set goals, it is necessary to collect and analyze the latest transport statistics.
