Development and deployment possibilities of AI technologies deserved special attention at international meetings
On 17–21 June, Dr Jūratė Petrauskienė, Director General of the State Data Agency (Statistics Lithuania), and Gita Literskė, Deputy Director, participated in the meeting of the Committee on Statistics and Statistical Policy (CSSP) of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) in Paris, and in the plenary session of the Conference of European Statisticians in Geneva.
The use of artificial intelligence for statistical purposes was discussed at the meeting of the Committee on Statistics and Statistical Policy. Based on the data of “Government AI Readiness Index 2023”, Lithuania ranks 35th out of 193 countries in terms of state readiness to apply artificial intelligence (AI). This shows that Lithuania is adequately prepared for successful integration of AI solutions by providing public services to society.
A meeting of statistical experts in Paris highlighted that AI technologies in official statistics can contribute to improving the quality of data collection, processing and analysis, as well as providing more accurate, comprehensive and faster insights. It was agreed that consideration should be given to ethical, legal and privacy aspects of AI integration.
At the meeting, the OECD member states also discussed the evaluation of statistical authorities of Croatia and Bulgaria in their pursuit of OECD membership. Complex data collection during surveys was a focus for intensive discussion. New models for evaluating challenging social phenomena and other topics were also discussed.
The Conference of European Statisticians is intended to assess the biggest challenges in statistics, and to prepare guidelines and recommendations to improve statistics production at the national level and their international comparability. This conference is one of the oldest meetings organized for the statistical community in the world as the beginning of its activity is recorded as early as 1928.
During the event, together with the United Nations Committee of Experts on Global Geospatial Information Management (UN-GGIM), the strategic orientation and strands of the work of National Statistical Institutes (NSIs) and geo-spatial agencies, and expected future trends were reviewed. In order to tackle sensitive and complex issues more effectively and efficiently, integration of geo-spatial and statistical data was also discussed.
Particular attention was paid to discussing the opportunities provided by artificial intelligence and machine learning. New technologies, such as Large Language Models (LLMs), have the potential to increase employee productivity by helping them perform their daily tasks and, more importantly, improve customer service. Participants of the meeting shared their practical experience, benefits and challenges of applying artificial intelligence in their organizations.
The plenary session also discussed the implementation of the next year’s system of national accounts, the work of the High Level Group for the Modernization of Official Statistics (HLG–MOS), the report of the special group on the role of NSIs in achieving national climate goals and other relevant topics.
