The Lithuanian Delegation Participated in the 56th Session of the United Nations Statistical Commission in New York

On 3–6 March 2025, Dr Jūratė Petrauskienė, Director General of the State Data Agency, together with Dr Inga Masiulaitytė-Šukevič, Deputy Director General, and Rugilė Andrejevskytė, Head of the European Affairs and International Cooperation Division, took part in the events of the 56th session of the United Nations Statistical Commission in New York.  During the visit, the Lithuanian delegation actively participated in key discussions, represented the country’s position on statistical policy issues, and established new international cooperation ties.

Key Meetings and Discussions 

The Lithuanian delegation participated in various high-level meetings and forums: 

  • On 3 March, a meeting was held with Rytis Paulauskas, Ambassador, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Lithuania to the United Nations, to discuss Lithuania’s priorities in the international statistical community and future cooperation plans. 
  • The delegation took part in the high-level forum “Data Governance”, where discussions were focused on data governance challenges and strategic solutions.
  • On 4 March, our country’s delegation participated in the European Union coordination meeting, where joint positions of the European Statistical System (ESS) were aligned.
  • Dr Jūratė Petrauskienė, during the session, presented Lithuania’s perspective on the role of statistics in the modern data ecosystem.

Issues Discussed at the United Nations Statistical Commission 

The Lithuanian delegation contributed to decisions in various statistical areas: 

  • System of Environmental-Economic Accounting (SEEA) – supporting the updates to the SEEA program. 
  • Population and Housing Census – the Lithuanian delegation approved the documents related to this field.
  • Working Methods of the Statistical Commission – Lithuania supported proposals to strengthen the Commission’s mandate and enhance work efficiency.
  • Migration Statistics – the Lithuanian delegation endorsed the United Nations Secretary-General’s report on the importance of migration data.
  • The 2030 Sustainable Development Goals– the improved global indicator framework was approved, aiming for more effective data application in sustainable development strategies.

Participation in Side Events 

Representatives of the Lithuanian delegation also took part in the following events: 

  • A discussion on strengthening social and demographic statistics, where strategic goals and opportunities for international cooperation were addressed. 
  • A high-level event “Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Official Statistics Production Process: Opportunities, Challenges, and Future Directions”.

Lithuania’s Position and Future Perspectives 

Lithuania clearly expressed its support for strengthening data management, modernizing statistical methods, and fostering closer international cooperation. Dr Jūratė Petrauskienė, Director General of the State Data Agency, actively participated in various discussions, enhancing and strengthening Lithuania’s visibility in the international statistical community. 

During the visit to New York, new connections were established with international partners, creating favorable conditions for developing joint projects and initiating appropriate statistical policy decisions.
