State Data Agency Organises Statistical Literacy Seminar for Teachers

On 20 October, marking European Statistics Day, the State Data Agency (Statistics Lithuania) organised an online statistical literacy seminar for upper-secondary school teachers. During the event, participants were introduced to tools for searching, analysing and visualising statistical data, discussed opportunities for their use in the classroom, and learned about the 2027 European Statistics Competition.
At the beginning of the seminar, Sandra Karnilavičiūtė, Adviser at the Public Relations Division of the State Data Agency, presented the Agency’s activities and the 10th season of the European Statistics Competition. Teachers were introduced to the competition format, participation requirements and opportunities to engage students in practical statistical data analysis activities.
“Teachers are a source of inspiration and a role model for students. We are therefore delighted to attract so many teachers every year who are eager to deepen their knowledge and explore ways of using data-driven decision-making in their lessons”, notes S. Karnilavičiūtė.
Kostas Gružas, Programmer-Analyst at the Geospatial and Regional Data Division, introduced participants to statistical data analysis and visualisation tools, as well as the capabilities of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). He demonstrated how these tools can be used to explore data, display it on maps and create interactive visualisations. The presentation also highlighted how such solutions can help students better understand statistical information and analyse various processes taking place in society.
Monika Pociūtė, Specialist at the Public Relations Division, presented the new Lithuanian Data Portal, its functionality and data search possibilities. Seminar participants were introduced to searching for official statistics indicators and ways of using them in the educational process. The discussion focused on how data published on the portal can be used to prepare teaching materials, analyse social, economic and demographic phenomena, and create practical assignments for students.
By organising statistical literacy seminars, the State Data Agency aims to promote the use of official statistics in education and help teachers discover new ways of integrating statistical data into their lessons. This year, more than 120 teachers from schools across Lithuania participated in the seminar. Such initiatives strengthen teachers’ competencies, encourage students’ interest in statistics, and contribute to the development of their analytical and critical thinking skills.
We would also like to remind you that registration for the 2027 European Statistics Competition is currently open. Teachers are invited to form student teams and take part in the competition, which provides an opportunity to apply statistical knowledge in practice and test skills at both the national and European levels.
