European Affairs
The State Data Agency actively participates in the drafting of European Union (EU) statistical legislation, takes part in EU-funded grants and projects, and engages in consultations and knowledge sharing with statistical authorities of other countries.
As Lithuania’s representative in the Council of the European Union’s Working Party on Statistics, the State Data Agency contributes to the implementation and preparation of EU legal acts related to the development and improvement of statistical domains. It also actively participates in the activities of the European Statistical System (ESS).
THE MAIN EU LEGAL ACT IN THE FIELD OF STATISTICS
The framework regulation forming the basis of the activities of the European statistical system, which was adopted on 11 March 2009:
- Regulation (EC) No 223/2009 of the European Parliament and of the Council on European statistics and repealing Regulation (EC, Euratom) No 1101/2008 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the transmission of data subject to statistical confidentiality to the Statistical Office of the European Communities, Council Regulation (EC) No 322/97 on Community Statistics, and Council Decision 89/382/EEC, Euratom establishing a Committee on the Statistical Programmes of the European Communities No. 223/2009 (PDF). - Regulation (EU) 2015/759 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 29 April 2015 amending Regulation (EC) No 223/2009 on European statistics.

PRESIDENCY OF THE EU COUNCIL
From 1 July until 31 December 2026, Irish is holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.

Upcoming meeting in the EU Council Working Party on statistics (CWPS) – 11 September 2026.
Lithuania will hold the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2027.
EUROPEAN STATISTICAL SYSTEM
The European Statistical System (ESS) is a partnership between Eurostat, national statistical institutions, and other national authorities responsible for the production, compilation, and dissemination of European statistics. Its main governing body is the ESS Committee (ESSC), which provides professional guidance and helps coordinate the development and expansion of European statistics.
The State Data Agency participates in the activities of the ESSC, in Eurostat-organized working groups, and in meetings of other formats.
Strategic issues concerning cooperation, statistical programmes, methodologies, and processes applied in the production of EU statistics are discussed at the meetings of Directors General of National Statistical Institutes (DGINS), which are held annually in a different Member State each year. From 3–5 June 2026, the 12th European Conference on Quality in Official Statistics will be held in Šibenik, Croatia, jointly organized by the Croatian Bureau of Statistics and Eurostat. The Director General, Dr. Jūratė Petrauskienė, has been appointed a member of the Scientific Committee of this conference. More information can be found here.
From 8–10 June 2022, the 10th European Conference on Quality in Official Statistics took place in Vilnius, jointly organized by the State Data Agency and Eurostat. The Director General, Dr. Jūratė Petrauskienė, served as Co-Chair of the Scientific Committee of the conference. Prior to the conference (on 7 June), four training courses were conducted.

EUROPEAN STATISTICAL ADVISORY COMMITTEE
In 2023 Director general Dr. Jūratė Petrauskienė was approved as a ESSC representative to the European Statistical Advisory Committee (ESAC).
ESAC plays an important role in ensuring that user requirements as well as the costs borne by information providers and producers are taken into account for the coordination of the strategic objectives and priorities of the EU statistical information policy.
