Cooperation with statistical institutions of other countries and international organisations

COOPERATION WITH STATISTICAL OFFICES OF OTHER COUNTRIES

The State Data Agency (Statistics Lithuania) maintains close relations with national statistical institutions (NSIs) of other countries, analyses and exchanges good practices, applies it when developing new projects. Together with other NSIs it also participates in joint ESS projects.

  • In 1991 a cooperation agreement was signed with the Statistical Office of Poland (GUS) and since then has developed into the exchange of best practices and common projects, in particular joint publications. This cooperation was also extended to the framework of the European Territorial programme, introducing statistics on Belarus and Ukraine.
  • In 1993 the cooperation agreement between Eurostat and NSIs of the Baltic states was signed.
  • The Baltic Steering Committee for Statistics was established in 1996, meetings take place annually on a rotation basis in one of the Baltic countries (in 2024 the meeting was hosted in Latvia, 2025 – Estonia, in 2026 the meeting is planned to take place in Lithuania). During these meetings the latest experience is exchanged and possibilities of further cooperation issues are discussed.
  • A partnership between the Baltic countries and Finland started several decades ago, it continues covering areas such as quality, dissemination, censuses, agriculture statistics. It has been also extended to regular participation in many Baltic-Nordic statistical events.
  • In 2020 a Memorandum of Understanding, was signed between Statistics Lithuania and Statistics Netherlands, foreseeing cooperation in the use of big data and application of innovation methods in the production of official statistics, including communication strategy, process improvement and development opportunities.

The issues relating to strategic cooperation, statistical programme, methods and processes for the production of Community statistics are discussed during the meetings of Director Generals of Nationals Statistical Institutes (the so-called DGINS), hosted by a different Member State annually. Further information is available here.

                                                                                 

UNITED NATIONS

Since 2012, Statistics Lithuania participates in the activities of the UN Statistical Commission as a national statistical institution. 

The 57th annual session took place on 3– 6 March 2026 in New York, USA. Further information available here.

Each year the UN Economic Commission for Europe (ECE) organises the Plenary of the Conference of European Statisticians (CES) at the highest level, which is also attended by the State Data Agency.

In 2026, the 74th CES meeting is scheduled to take place on 24–26 June in Geneva, Switzerland. Further information is available here.

 

                                                                                 

ORGANISATION FOR ECONOMIC CO-OPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT

On 5 July 2018, Lithuania became a full member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

By 2018, the State Data Agency (Statistics Lithuania) participated in meetings of the OECD Committee on Statistics and Statistical Policy (CSSP) in the capacity of a Participant, was involved in the Statistical Review process, and represented Lithuania in other OECD activities.

The 23rd OECD-CSSP meeting is scheduled to take place on 22–23 June in Paris, France.

                                                                                 

INTERNATIONAL STATISTICAL INSTITUTE AND INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR OFFICIAL STATISTICS

Since 2014 the State Data Agency (Statistics Lithuania) has been an institutional / Ex officio member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI), a non-governmental organisation that promotes the understanding, development, and good practice of statistics worldwide.

Since 2020 the State Data Agency (Statistics Lithuania) has been an institutional member of the International Association for Official Statistics (IAOS). The IAOS is an international non-governmental organisation, established and developed as a specialised association of the ISI, dedicated to promoting the understanding and advancement of official statistics, as well as fostering their effective development and the provision of official statistical services worldwide.

For the 2025–2027 term, the Director General of the State Data Agency, Dr Jūratė Petrauskienė, has been elected as a member of the IAOS Executive Committee and will serve as President-Elect of the IAOS. She will assume the office of President of the IAOS in 2027.
