Cooperation with statistical institutions of other countries and international organisations

The State Data Agency (Statistics Lithuania) (the name entered into force on 1 January 2023) maintains close relations with national statistical institutions (NSIs) of other countries, analyses and exchanges good practices, applies it when developing new projects. Together with other NSIs it also participates in joint ESS projects.

  • In 1991 a cooperation agreement was signed with the Statistical Office of Poland (GUS) and since then has developed into the exchange of best practices and common projects, in particular joint publications. This cooperation was also extended to the framework of the European Territorial programme, introducing statistics on Belarus and Ukraine.
  • In 1993 the cooperation agreement between Eurostat and NSIs of the Baltic states was signed. The Baltic Steering Committee for Statistics was established in 1996, meetings take place annually on a rotation basis in one of the Baltic countries (in 2023 the meeting was hosted in Vilnius, in 2024 – in Latvia, in 2025 the meeting is planned to take place in Estonia). During these meetings the latest experience is exchanged and possibilities of further cooperation issues are discussed.
  • A partnership between the Baltic countries and Finland started several decades ago, it continues covering areas such as quality, dissemination, censuses, agriculture statistics. It has been also extended to regular participation in many Baltic-Nordic statistical events.
  • In 2020 a Memorandum of Understanding, was signed between Statistics Lithuania and Statistics Netherlands, foreseeing cooperation in the use of big data and application of innovation methods in the production of official statistics, including communication strategy, process improvement and development opportunities.

The issues relating to strategic cooperation, statistical programme, methods and processes for the production of Community statistics are discussed during the meetings of Director Generals of Nationals Statistical Institutes (the so-called DGINS), hosted by a different Member State annually. Relevant information is available here.
